A fun Spring preschool activity for learning to count! Flowers and butterflies preschool counting activity that is so simple to create with some store-bought help.

Michael’s recently had a 50% off sale on pretty much everything in the store-at least the items I happened to be looking at that day! (Woo hoo!) So, I grabbed a few extra things because I knew I could create some learning games for my daughter from the items. Two of the items I grabbed were cutout flowers and small butterfly embellishments like you would use on cards or in a scrapbook. They will become a flowers and butterflies preschool counting activity.

Preschool Counting Activity with Flowers and Butterflies

I took five flower cutouts of the same color and wrote a number symbol and number word onto each flower. One flower has “1” and “one” for example, and another flower had “2” and “two”. I repeated this step until five flowers were numbered.

I laminated them for durability. (And they have lasted for years!)

Along with the paper flowers, I also had some butterfly embellishments that we used as our hands-on manipulative in this preschool counting activity.

I laid the flowers and butterflies on the floor and my daughter and I counted out butterflies to match each number on each flower.

I started by saying, “Each of these flowers has a number on it. See, this one says ‘1’, this one says ‘2’ [and we counted up to 5]. Let’s put the correct number of butterflies onto each flower. We need one for this flower…” and so on until all five flowers were covered by their corresponding number of butterflies.

Don’t have flower cutouts? Cut out your own from colored paper, or use coffee filters as your flowers. You can cut out simple butterfly-shapes from paper and make enough to be able to count out butterflies for each flower. This preschool counting activity can be made with what you have at home.

This is such a simple way to teach a preschool counting activity in a fun way that can correspond to a child’s interest or the season. I shared 4 more Spring Activities for Preschool. Toddlers, and Kindergartners that are just as simple.
